Topsite Eco Team go Wild About Autumn!
On Thursday, our Topsite Eco Council was invited to take part in Wirral Council's Wild About Autumn event at Wirral Country Park, Thurstaston!
We started the day off with a barn owl talk, meeting a barn owl called Roy. We learned that owls are diurnal (can hunt in the day or night) and fly silently due to the shape of and lack of oil on their feathers. Roy was a very chatty owl, having spent her whole life around people. She even showed off her silent flying for us!
Next up was a litter pick around the grounds at Thurstaston, followed by a walk down to the beach. Once we reached the beach, we began our first activity: a seashore search! We were given a key and 15 minutes to find as many things as possible. Some of us found crabs, seaweed, whelk egg cases and also mermaid's purses (shark egg casings).
Once the search was over, we conducted a mud dig. This involved using a spade to dig in the more clay-like sand, sieving the contents and examining the remnants for signs of life. Other groups were lucky enough to find lugworms, but most of us couldn't find a single creature - possibly now that the weather is getting colder.
After lunch, we had a go at some autumnal leaf rubbings. We then chopped up some apples to be pressed into fresh apple juice. Finally, we had a go at making willow dream catchers! Before leaving for school, we gathered round the campfire and had a toasted marshmallow.
We all really enjoyed our Autumn celebration. What a way to enter a half term break!
