Celebrating Our Green Flag Award with Distinction! 

We are thrilled to announce that St George’s Primary School has been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction - for an incredible fourth time in a row! Our Eco Council & How We Work At St George's, our Eco Council is at the heart of our sustainability efforts. The council is pupil-led and made up of dedicated, enthusiastic representatives from each class from Year 1 to Year 4. In Year 5, pupils apply for their post and can potentially stay in role for their final two years. Led by Miss Jones, the Eco Council meets regularly to discuss environmental issues, review school habits, and propose real changes they want to see around our school.

Democratic Action & Student Voice

Ideas are brought to meetings for open discussion, and decisions are made democratically as a team. Our councillors take these ideas back to their classrooms, share updates in school assemblies, and communicate with parents through our family newsletter.

This democratic process gives our children a genuine voice in decision-making, extending learning beyond the classroom and helping pupils build a strong, lifelong sense of responsibility for their surroundings and the wider community.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Our Eco Councillors lead by example every day to make positive changes across our school site:

• Actively monitoring electricity usage across the school - reminding everyone to turn off lights, interactive screens, and air conditioning when rooms are empty.

• Organising regular litter picks to reduce waste and keep our school grounds clean, neat, and inviting for everyone.

• Driving campaigns around reducing, reusing, and recycling across all year groups.

Our Main Focus Topics & Achievements in 25/26

This year, the Eco Council led initiatives focused on three key areas: Biodiversity, Marine Conservation, and Waste Reduction. Here is a look at what we achieved together:

• Marine Conservation Days: Eco Council members attended specialised marine conservation days, gaining a deeper understanding of human impacts on ocean life and developing school-wide ideas to help protect marine wildlife.

• Local Beach Clean: Joining forces with other local schools, our pupils took real-life action by cleaning a nearby beach and measuring plastic litter.

• Wildlife Rescue Workshop: Pupils enjoyed an inspiring visit from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, learning how to care for beached wildlife and respect our shores.

• Trees for Local Wildlife: We planted new beech trees along our pathways! Over time, these will provide essential nesting spots for local birds and supply beechnuts for neighbourhood squirrels and mice.

• Nocturnal Wildlife Cameras: We installed nighttime wildlife cameras across the school grounds. This exciting tech lets pupils discover the secret nocturnal creatures visiting our grounds while we sleep!

• Pre-Loved Swap Shops: To combat the environmental impact of fast fashion, our swap shops encouraged pupils and staff to trade and choose pre-loved items.

• Recycled Stage Props: Our creative Year 6 team built their production props almost entirely out of recycled printer paper boxes, proving how easy (and budget-friendly!) it is to repurpose materials.
