Year-1 (ID 1008)

Year 1

We are pleased to welcome you to the Year 1 page. The main need-to-know information can be found here as the year progresses. Watch out for additional curriculum information on Seesaw.

If you have a general query, please email schooloffice@stgeorges.wirral.sch.uk and we shall endeavour to reply as soon as we can.

A typical day in year 1:

Home Learning

The children will be set spelling activities on Seesaw each Friday. These are to be completed and a photograph should be uploaded before the following Wednesday, so your child’s class teacher can give feedback.

Maths home learning will be based on Maths Whizz. All children will receive a login so they can access this from home.

Termly optional learning tasks will also be set for you to complete throughout the term that link to our current learning.

The children will bring home reading books daily and a reading log. Please give your child lots of opportunity to talk about and read their book, then write feedback for the teacher in their reading log. These should be sent into school every day with your child’s book bag, so they can change their reading book when needed.

Our Curriculum

Full curriculum can be accessed in the curriculum area of our website.    We will share additional curriculum information on Seesaw.  Some highlights are below.

English

Throughout the year, the children will continue to develop their love of books by looking at various genres and authors.

Maths

In mathematics, the children will consolidate their understanding of numbers by counting forwards and backwards within 100. The children will develop their fluency in number bonds and will enjoy problem-solving and applying these skills in the Provision Area through games such as Snakes and Ladders and cracking codes. You can support their learning through use of Maths Whizz which children will become familiar with in the Autumn Term before we share that with you.

Science

The children will enjoy observing the seasonal changes during our trips to Forest School. They will explore the outdoors and learn about various plants over time, sowing bean seeds and observing them grow. A highlight of year 1 is the visit from ‘Animals Take Over’, where children will have the opportunity to hold and get up close to a range of animals.

Foundation subjects throughout the year:

Assessments In Year 1

In June, all children sit the national phonics screening test.  Further information about this  will be shared in parent/carer meetings and can be read on our phonics assessment and information page
